New York City’s South Street Seaport

It’s the perfect time of year to visit New York City’s South Street Seaport!

South Street Seaport is located on Pier 17 in lower Manhattan and has some of the oldest architecture in that part of the city.

In addition to having a lot of restored buildings from the 1800s, there are also renovated sail ships from the 1800s. Some of these ship still sail and take visitors out into the waterways.

There is a lot do to and see at South Street Seaport. Here are some highlights:

South Street Seaport Museum

South Street Seaport museum is one of a number of museums in America that together are America’s National Maritime Museum.

19th century print shop, exhibits, craft center, conservation lab, archeology, museum, maritime library.

It is also home to the US’ largest privately owned historical fleet. When the weather is good, visitors can sail out on the water on some of these ships

Shopping and Dining

Free Events

There are free events year round at South Street Seaport. In the warmer months, there are musicians, street performers, dancing and some shows.

Great Views

There are some great views of the Brooklyn Bridge and of the harbor and waterways from South Street Seaport. It’s a nice place to be reminded that when you’re in Manhattan, you’re on an island. There are plenty of benches and chairs to sit and take in the scenery and people and rest for a bit.
