It’s festival time in Montreal! Montreal’s 11th annual High Lights Festival starts February 18th and ends at dawn on the 28th. Each year a country, city and region are highlighted. This year’s event spotlights Portugal, New Orleans and the Eastern Townships of southeastern Quebec.
The High Lights Festival has tons of performances – musical, theater, art, dance and more. The festival is a food and wine lover’s paradise. Chefs from all over the world participate to create culinary delights, including 40 chefs and winemakers from Portugal.
A couple of great events happening: The Buena Vista Social Club and Virginia Rodrigues perform on February 26th. An exhibition of sketches done by singer-songwriter-artist and Montréal native, Leonard Cohen, runs the length of the festival and admission is free.
There admission is free to many of the events and exhibitions, including the Festival of Quebec Cheeses and the Crossroads of Flavour, a huge market, both held in Complexe Desjardins.
The festival ends with Nuit Blanche – an all night party starting on February 27th. Nuit Blanche features more than 150 free events and activities. There is a free shuttle service to get from event to event and the Metro will run all night for those who want to party until dawn.
