What does a city do with an old limestone quarry and garbage landfill? If it’s Montreal, it turns it into a sustainable park!
Saint-Michel’s Environmental Complex (Complexe Environnemental de Saint-Michel) may have once been one of North America’s largest landfills, as well a limestone quarry, but it is now a beautiful and environmentally sustainable park.
Not only is Saint-Michel’s now a beautiful park with bike paths, cross-country ski and snowshoe trails, walking paths and other fun outdoor activities, it is also the location of Cirque du Soleil’s international headquarters.
Montreal’s sustainable development of the park has been very successful. Not only is it a place where visitors can enjoy green space and outdoor activities, part of the park is a dedicated recycling center.
You can read a brochure about the park here.
