Assistant Hostel Manager – Nights and Weekends

Jazz Hostels is currently hiring Assistant Managers for 3 of its New York City hostels. Assistant Managers work in fast-paced though laid-back environments that offer great opportunities to meet international travelers and gain hospitality experience that would normally take years to achieve in a conventional hotel.
Assistant Managers work full-time on evenings and weekends to ensure efficient hostel operations during off-hours and provide high quality guest service in safe, clean, and welcoming atmospheres. Primary responsibilities include:
- Contributing to the hostel vibe by helping staff organize parties and events for guests
- Facilitating cooperation and teamwork among staff, placing a high emphasis on customer satisfaction, hostel cleanliness, and organization
- Communicating all evening happenings to the Hostel Manager, and working together with the Hostel Manager to solve any problems that may arise
- Providing management & financial reports as required
- Reporting building issues to the Hostel Manager and occasionally working with contractors to ensure that the hostel is always in good working order
- Recommending new front desk and housekeeping staff for hire to the Hostel Manager
- Regularly developing and implementing ideas for the hostel’s improvement and for enhancing guests’ experience
QUALIFICATIONS:
First and foremost Jazz Hostels seeks managers who are interested in travel and hospitality and are able to work efficiently in fast-paced hostels with lots of interaction with guests. Excellent customer service, computer literacy, and English fluency (speaking and writing) are must-haves. Proficiency in other languages is a definite plus. Other qualifications are:

- Exceptional written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work effectively without immediate supervision
- Ability to manage time and people effectively
- Proven problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Experience with handling cash and recording sales transactions
- International and/or domestic travel experience
COMPENSATION:
Full-time salary plus two weeks paid vacation. Housing may also be available; please inquire when applying.

Group Bookings Assistant
Jazz Hostels’ 6 properties in New York and Miami attract over 200,000 travelers to New York and Miami every year. Our guests hail from every country and travel for recreation or education purposes, and travel either independently or as part of an organized group. Groups, in fact, make up a large portion of guests at Jazz Hostels and as such we take great care to ensure their smooth bookings and stays.
Jazz Hostels is now hiring a Group Bookings Assistant to help process group reservations for all Jazz locations. As part of the Group Sales team, the Group Bookings Assistant fulfills booking requests and provides excellent customer service for groups during their stay at Jazz. The Assistant books thousands of beds annually and coordinates travel planning with international agencies, businesses, and families. The position offers unique insight into business development, marketing strategy, and management-level customer service from a hands-on perspective.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Regularly responding to a high volume of customer inquiries via phone and email
- Processing group reservations and efficiently following reservations through their various stages of confirmation
- Recruiting new group clients
- Maintaining sales goals, with accurate tracking
- Completing department & financial reports accurately and on time
- Regularly researching and responding to market competition
- Completing a “Manager-on-Duty” shift approximately one weekend day per month
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Groups Booking Assistant should possess exceptional oral and written communication skills, should be enthusiastic about international travel, and have an interest in working in hospitality, customer service, or marketing. A long-term commitment is required and as such, the position offers tremendous opportunity for growth within the company.
Fluency in English (oral and written), computer proficiency, and attention to detail are a must. Knowledge of other languages, reservation software, and sales a plus.
Additional qualifications include:
- Honesty, reliability, and initiative
- A positive, people-oriented attitude and a sense of humor
- Ability to effectively manage time and multiple projects at once under minimal supervision
- Competent math skills, including a comfort in frequently determining discounts, commissions, tax, percentages, and volume, also in conjunction with Microsoft Excel
- Fiscal responsibility reflected in prompt receipt of payments, organized financial recording and reporting
- Ability to nurture existing long-term relationships, and build new partnerships with group clients
- Ability to work in a fast-paced office with diverse personalities
COMPENSATION:
Full-time salary, two weeks vacation, plus bonus dependent on sale volume. Accommodations in a Jazz Hostel may be available for a limited time; please inquire when applying.
