The number one rule when traveling with kids is to be prepared. Figure out how long your travel time is and pack enough to keep the kids occupied, comfortable and fed each hour of travel.
1. Make a List
The first thing to do when traveling with kids is to make a list of everything you need to pack to keep them occupied, fed, dry and happy.
2. Bring New Toys
New toys can keep their attention longer than toys they’ve played with before.
3. Pack Snacks
Make sure you’ve packed enough snacks to get them though the entire trip. Juice boxes, crackers, fruit and other non sugary food that is easy to pack and won’t cause hyperactivity or fussiness are great to travel with.
Packing surprises for the kids can help in difficult moments. Toys, books, special snacks, etc. can be given to them too keep them occupied and interested when they’ve gotten tired of their toys and books.
5. Have the Right Traveling Gear
If you’re traveling with a child or children who need a crib to sleep in during travel time, find out from the airline or train if they have any and how you can use it on your trip.
6. Bring Pillow and Blankets
If you’re going to be traveling during a time when the kids will need to nap or sleep, it will help if they have pillow and blankets to snuggle into and be comfortable.
7. Get Your Children Involved
If your kids are old enough, get them involved with the planning and packing. Talk to them about the adventure of traveling, what they can expect on the trip and build their anticipation for the trip.
