The Roosevelt Island Tramway might just be the least well known iconic sight in New York City. It runs from Roosevelt Island high over the East River into the heart of midtown Manhattan and only costs $2.25 each way!
The Roosevelt Island Tramway offers passengers amazing views of Midtown Manhattan’s East Side as it soars 250 feet (76 m) above the East River. It takes about three minutes to travel the 3100 feet (940 m) from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island.
The Tramway only makes one stop in each direction. From Manhattan, you can board it at 59th Street and 2nd Avenue.
If you purchase a metro card for the subway to use while visiting, you can also use it to ride the tram. The fare to Roosevelt Island is the same as a subway fare. which is $2.25 as of December 2010.
The Roosevelt Island Tramway has been featured in many major motion pictures such as: Spider-Man, City Slickers, The Professional and Nighthawks. For twelve years it was also featured in Universal Studios theme park attraction ‘Kongfrontation’ in Orlando Florida. Fans of the widely popular Grand Theft Auto may recognize it from the video game.
The Roosevelt Island Tramway is the only aerial commuter tram in the United States. About 12,000 people live on Roosevelt Island, many who work in Manhattan. The Tramway is not the only way to get on and off the Island, but because it doesn’t have to crawl along the busy streets of New York City, it is a popular and convenient way for commuters to get to and from work.
The Tram is also a green way to travel. It is powered by electricity which helps to cut down on emissions.
