How to Travel Around the United States

Getting around the United States is easy and there are quite a few ways to travel within this big country.

The United States is a huge country but it is very easy to get around. Here are several of the best ways to travel around the US.

Train

Train travel in the United States can be an amazing experience. The country is so big and has such different landscapes. Traveling from New York City to Miami by train you can see some of the big cities of the Northeast, travel through the deep South and swamps of Florida and then the vibrance of Miami.

Amtrak is the train that travels nationally. Tickets are reasonable and there are discounted fares if you travel during certain times of the week. Students and senior citizens also can book discounted tickets.

Amtrak also goes up to Canada and it’s a beautiful way to cross the border.

Plane

Airports are plentiful in the US and inexpensive flights can be found if booked far enough in advance. There are a lot of airlines to choose from, most of which offer frequent flyer programs.

One of the best airlines is Southwest, which doesn’t charge a change fee if you need to changes your flights.

All major cities in the United States have at least one airport. One way of finding cheaper flights is to check flights at all airports around where you are flying into or leaving.

Bus

Traveling by bus in the United States can be a great option if you’re traveling regionally. Tickets are often inexpensive within regions and travel is pretty efficient. If you’re traveling a long distance, buses can be a bit longer of a ride than a train or airplane, but prices still may be cheapest by bus.

Some buses offer free WIFI, which is a plus if you’re traveling along way. Greyhound is the biggest national bus line in the US. There are also regional bus companies as well as charter buses that run in the US.

Greyhound buses also travel up into Canada.

Car

If you like to travel at your own pace and see a lot between destinations, renting a car is a good option. Rental cars are available at every major airport in the US and even within towns and cities away from airports.

The best way to find good deals on rental cars is to use a comparison website like Kayak, Orbitz or Priceline. Depending on the time of year and where you are going, Priceline has a ‘name your price’ (bid) option where very low prices can be found.

Driving in the United States is easy, just be sure you know the rules of the road before you drive off the rental car lot.
