Have you ever wanted to order food from a giant building-sized orange? You can at Gibeau Orange Julep in Montreal, Canada!
Gibeau Orange Julep, also known at OJ or The Big Orange, is an old fashioned institution in Montreal. It’s been serving Montrealers and visitors since 1945. It has been called “…Montreal’s greatest roadside attraction” in the book Resto a Go-Go: 180 Cheap and Fun Places to Eat and Drink in Montreal.
The recipe of its signature drink, the Orange Julep, is a closely held secret (much like the recipe for Coke). There is supposedly tons of sugar, possibly some milk and a whole lot of yummy flavor.
Gibeau Orange Julep is a drive in fast food restaurant. Servers wearing roller skates used to roll up to the cars in the parking lot to take and serve their orders. Now, diners go up to the window in the giant orange to order, but the food is just as good.
They have all the best kinds of fast food including, some say, the best poutine in Montreal. They also server burgers, french fries, gyros, sandwiches and even veggie burgers and salads.
Gibeau Orange Julep is open 24 hours a day except in winter when it has more limited hours of operation. It’s a perfect place for a late night food run!
