There is always that person you meet while traveling. You know, the one who everyone wants to get away from and feels embarrassed around. If you want to, not only make sure you’re not that person, but stay popular while traveling, here are a few simple rules to follow
Staying popular while traveling isn’t rocket science. It’s really easy to do if you follow some very basic rules.
Put Yourself Out There
Putting yourself out there might be stepping out of your comfort zone but do it anyway! Don’t wait for people to approach you, make the first move and start up a conversation. People like friendly people who want to connect with them. Be that person. If you’re shy and introverted, don’t worry. Just fake it until you feel it! Pretend you’re outgoing. If you do that enough, you’ll start to really becoming outgoing.
Ask questions rather than just talking about yourself. Be aware of how much you’re talking and how much you’re listening. Don’t dominate conversations. If you’re staying in a hostel or chatting with locals, spend more time asking questions than talking about your self. People like to feel like you’re interested in what they have to say.
Putting yourself out there, starting conversations in a friendly way by asking a question or introducing yourself is the first step to becoming and staying well received and liked.
Small gifts can go a long way to staying popular while traveling. It’s not about bribing anyone with a gift, it’s about having a generous spirit and building a sense of respect and connecting with people.
This is especially true if you’re traveling to a different country. Having little gifts to give people who help you along the way is a really nice way to thank them and you will be remembered by them in a good light.
Some great gift ideas that are light and easy to pack are post cards (you can personalize them with a hand write note) and candy or small snack from where you’re from.
Invite People to Join You
Don’t wait to be invited everything – invite people to join you. If you meet someone or a group of people who you feel you might connect with, or have already connected with, invite them to do something with you. Ask them if they’d like to get a drink, sightsee, or have a meal.
If you sit around waiting to be invited by others, it may never happen. Be proactive and soon others will be inviting you to join them.
Note: Always stay in public places when you’re with people you don’t know. Even more important than being popular is staying safe!
Don’t Be Rude
This sounds so simple but many people don’t think about how their behavior are perceived and how they can affect others.
Pay attention to the level of your voice – how loudly do you really need to speak for people to hear you? Stop swearing so much, it’s not as cool as you think it sounds.
Take the time to learn about the culture and customs of a place they’re visiting. What is polite in your culture may be incredibly rude in another. Learning the local culture and customs is a great way to stay popular with locals and other travelers alike!
Be the Person You Want to Meet
Staying popular all comes down to being the kind of person you would like to meet while traveling. Being popular doesn’t mean you have to be the most outgoing, the best looking, the richest, or the most anything else. It means being the kind of person that you would like to meet.
Do you want to meet someone who sits in the corner waiting for someone to talk to them or would you like to meet someone who comes up to you and introduces themselves and starts up a conversation? Do you want to meet someone who is loud, hogs the conversation and is overall obnoxious or do you want to meet someone who is friendly, interested in connecting with you and is kind and polite?
Follow these simple rules and you will stay popular wherever you travel!
